Welcome to The Gabby In The City Weekly (or The Weekly, for time and ease of typing): a collection of anecdotes, reviews, and recommendations. I don’t think we need any more explanation than that so let’s get into it!
NYC Says Goodbye to Summer
September in New York is always an action-packed month with The US Open and New York Fashion Week closing out summer. There is no shortage of events and drama to keep the city tuned in. I prefer to take a laissez-faire approach to NYFW —allowing brands to reach out to me for the event and show opportunities. Hill House Home was so sweet and invited me in to take a look at the new fall drop and everything was stunning —especially the Green Jacquard Print.
I also attended the Christian Cowan SS23 After Party with smashbox cosmetics and that was definitely a new experience for me. It was fun to dress up a little bit and see the city at night! Following all the collections throughout the week is actually so much fun. My favorites this season (SS23) were: Fe Noel, Altuzarra, Carolina Herrera, Brandon Maxwell, and Khaite. Green persisted as a dominant color for the spring collections (LOVE). Yellow, knits, ruching and pleating, and playful transparency. And dare I say, dresses with jeans and the peplum are also headed for a comeback.
Big Week for News
In world news, I’ve been following closely the devastation of Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico. NPR put together a great article on ways to help out. I never understood the fascination with true crime podcasts, but after the release of Adnan Syed this week, I might give Serial | Season One a go. I’m currently subscribed to The Morning, a New York Times email newsletter to stay informed on real-time world news like the unrest in Iran. It’s Climate Week and National Voter Registration Day was September 20th; make sure you’re registered to vote for the upcoming midterm elections.
It’s Back To Autumn Season
Fall is coming in hot, which means fall fashion will be gracing us with its presence oh so soon. I was too excited to play with some of my more fall-aligned nuuly picks including this leather mini and a fun feather hem blazer dress. Both pair nicely with my new platform loafers that I snagged from H&M.
I also got an exciting package from Papier, my new favorite shop for personalized stationery goods. Their team was sweet enough to send over a bunch of cute goodies. I cannot recommend the Weekly Overview notepad enough. The perfect cute accessory for your desk.
Yes, I’ve Seen It
It’s been a huge week in entertainment for me. I saw one of my favorite artists of all time Florence and The Machine(stream Dance Fever!!) at Madison Square Garden. I’ve only ever been to maybe three concerts my entire life so this was a big deal. She was incredible!! Fate: Winx Saga dropped their second season and of course, I’ve binged watched all of it. Loved the direction of this season and the story arcs for all the characters!
Netflix Australia also dropped an excellent teen drama reboot of Heartbreak High. It’s a mix of Sex Education and Euphoria and I can’t recommend it enough. I’m personally pretty resistant to shows that are on a weekly drop schedule, but I’ve been keeping up with House of The Dragon, The Serpent Queen, and Tell Me Lies (I hated this book, but the show is entertaining). The new adaptation of Vampire Academy on Peacock is also pretty good. My favorite watch of the week had to be Do Revenge on Netflix starring Cami Mendes and Maya Hawke. The costumes and writing were CAMP. I’m obsessed.
Always Got My Head In A Book
My reading is still going strong and it’s one of my favorite ways to pass time at this point. You can find me all fall and winter snuggled up in my apartment with a good thriller!! I finished up the last book of the A Court of Thrones and Roses series. I am not embarrassed to say I love these books, lol. As a send-off to the final days of summer, I read People We Meet On Vacation and Every Summer After. Both books were good although neither are my favorite of the year. I also forced my way through The Wives, and y’all it’s so boring. I kept waiting for it to get good and it just never did. Taking full advantage of my library card was a win. I’m just glad I didn’t spend my actual money on it.
Beauty Queen In Training
For some reason, I’ve been very into makeup again especially colorful eye looks. I’ve been playing around with the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette and recently picked up the Culture palette By Juvia’s Place. I haven’t bought new makeup in ages and always rely on old faithful products I’ve been using since I was 16. I’m super excited to be working on a collaboration with Flip(get $30 to shop), a beauty review and shopping app. I got to choose a few new products to try out. I’m super excited to try out the Saie Slip Tint, Tower 28 Bronzer, Supergoop Glow Oil, ZitSticka Goo Getter. I also restocked my Necessaire Sandalwood Body Wash.
That’s all I’ve got for this week. Until the next!
