After living here for almost 7 months now, I realized that New Yorkers simply dress better. Imagine that kid you went to high school with who was always just a little bit more fashion forward than the rest of your class and multiply that by about 2 million people. You’ll see the average person in a sweater and jeans on the streets of New York City, for sure.
More likely than not, you’ll also see glamazons stalking the streets of SoHo. Fanny packs are styled so well that you’ll find yourself contemplating wearing them non-ironically too. The fashionistas that own this city will make you think twice about dad sneakers, neon, and any other out there trend that would really only grace the runways.
Styling Trends in A Practical Way
I’m not usually a huge trend follower. Most of the time I’m content with classic pieces styled into predictable outfits. I like that my Instagram feed is filled with relatable, comfortable, and affordable outfits. BUT, I’m not immune to the culture and fashion of the city and I’ve found myself much more aware of the trends that are sprouting for the upcoming season. {I attended one NYFW show and now I think I’m an expert. LOL Just kidding.}
In today’s post, I’m going to attempt to have these worlds collide. Truthfully, I love coming up with new outfits and using accessories to style them in completely new ways with completely new vibes. I’ll probably start creating capsule collections for each season so that I can have some old faithfuls to come back to each year. I also would love to try to purchase some new pieces to spice it up though!
Also, I always thought that I wasn’t cool enough to be edgy with my fashion. I am a literal Slytherin Leo. If that isn’t the definition of edgy, I couldn’t tell you what is. My point is that I find myself being pulled to feminine cuts in edgy colors and patterns. I’m loving it and can’t wait to try a softer version of this in the spring and summer. Now, on to the trends…
Pastels
This is a huge trend that I’m excited to play with this season. The pastel hues that are coming out especially for spring are made for the people who aren’t into the whole neon craze [aka me]. You will probably never catch me in anything neon unless it comes in tan, black, or white. Again, I am very into mixing feminine colors and cuts with edgy accessories or outerwear. I can’t wait to pair cute pastel dresses and blouses with my favorite leather jacket, sneakers, and/or distressed denim.
Yellow
For someone who literally wears no color, ever, it’s quite strange that the first two things I want to incorporate are.. colors. Yellow is an incredibly happy color. I feel better when I see someone else wearing it and I’d love to have a staple piece in my closet that I adore in this shade. It also looks incredible on darker skin tones which is a blessing and a great way to show off your warm-weather glow.
Animal Print
Animal print is all the rage now. I mean this trend has been on fire since the fall and I don’t think it’ll be going anywhere soon. These are the type of fun, edgy prints that I’m talking about. I absolutely adore anything in snake print, but I would love to get a pair of cheetah/leopard print shoes. I had a dope pair of espadrilles I stole from my mom but they got wrecked last summer from all the walking I did.
Earth Tones
A ton of spring collections are coming out that feature head to toe looks in monochromatic earth tones and I AM IN TO IT. You can incorporate this into so many different styles from two-piece jogger sets for my athleisure lovers to cream high waisted jeans and white sneakers. The incredible thing is that this palette pairs incredibly well with animal print accessories and is one way I already know I’ll be mixing them into my old spring and summer pieces.
Utility
I consider myself to be the queen of rompers and jumpsuits. My collection ranges from all different lengths, colors, and patterns and I am ready to expand. Boiler style jumpsuits are going to be all over the place. It’s the perfect edgy look that can be given a feminine touch with espadrilles, a cute cross body, and a pair of statement earrings. Excuse me while I die of happiness.
Okay, so there you have it. These are the trends that I want to try and some pieces that I hand selected for you at a range of prices, sizes, and styles. Did you enjoy this post? I don’t really talk about fashion and trends much on the blog, but so many of you resonated with the “I’d wear trendy items if I knew how to style them.” in my recent reader survey. I figured I would start here with telling you what I have my eye on! If you didn’t take the survey yet, you totally should!
