Capsule collections didn’t seem like they would actually work. How would I not get bored of a closet made of only 20-30 pieces? But then I realized that I was already basically doing that. Living in NYC has forced my style to evolve. I’d like to think I have a much more refined and neutral style. It’s a true vibe that I’ve been curating for the past couple of months. I also added some pieces that I absolutely LOVE when I was back in Virginia for Christmas.
Today, I’m taking my most worn items and turning them into a capsule collection. I’ve styled 20 items into 15 outfits. This was actually an incredibly fun way to spend the frigid Monday in NYC on the MLK holiday. I want to continue to do these all year long. It was a fun way to stretch my brain to create new outfits that I hadn’t even tried before.
My Twenty Piece Capsule Wardrobe: Winter
I honestly think creating a capsule wardrobe was so easy because I only pretty much wear neutral colors. I think if you have maybe one or two items in each group that has a fun print or color this would still work though! Most of my items are from Old Navy, J. Crew Factory, Lauren Ralph Lauren, and Nordstrom Rack. I’m starting to put more emphasis on investing in higher quality pieces that will last because, in the end, that’s how we really achieve affordability right?
Tops & Sweaters
My tops and sweaters are the most basic of the bunch. I like soft knits and turtlenecks. A good turtleneck is essential. It’s a must-have. I would wear one every single day and I think I’ve collected enough where I could do that.
Black Sweater (plus)
Cream Sweater
Gray Sweater
Lilac Sweater
Black Turtleneck
Bottoms & Dresses
Here is where I wanted to really experiment. I am such a dress and skirt girl. In the winter, I always get sad because I feel like I can’t wear dresses and skirts or my legs will go numb and fall off. But, If you find creative ways [read: accessories] to keep your legs warm, you can 100% bring flirty and fun dresses into the colder months. Of course, I also had to feature my favorite jeans of the moment from Old Navy. Holy cow, I’ve gotten so many compliments on them and people can never believe they’re from Old Navy!
Printed Dress
Black Denim Skirt (plus)
Blue Jeans (love the wash!)
Black Jeans (similar)
Fleece Lined Leggings
Outerwear
Outerwear is my favorite part of winter time. A close tie with turtlenecks. The people of NYC kill the outerwear game. The key here is to incorporate style as much as possible without sacrificing on warmth. There are so many different types of coats that are in style that you will definitely find one to fit your vibe.
Parka
Teddy Coat
Wool Coat (plus)
Leather Jacket
Heavy Cardigan (looks so soft!)
Shoes
Shoes are my favorite accessory to splurge on, but recently I’ve found that almost every single pair that I find myself frequently gravitating to is from DSW. I really wish this was sponsored, but know that if I ever nail that down I really do love shopping there. They have such great deals on some of my favorite brands [think: Steve Madden, Nike, Adidas, Hunter, Vans].
Sturdy Winter Boots (similar)
OTK Cloth Boots
Black Booties (similar)
Brown/Taupe Booties
White Sneakers
20 Items Styled 15 Ways
Of course, I further styled the main pieces of my collection with basic accessories. You’ll probably notice most of these from my countless Instagram photos, but I’m always reaching for my black square frames, my furball hat, and black circular belt from BooHoo. I also love my Cabby Hat from H&M. If it wouldn’t have made an already long process longer, I would probably have reached for my favorite tortoiseshell earrings from Primark and bar necklace from Francesca’s.
I hope you enjoyed this post! Have you played around with creating a capsule collection or does downsizing your wardrobe scare you!! It really heckin’ scares me so no worries! I don’t know why though because I quite frankly only wear the same 20 pieces of clothing.
Keep on keepin’ on,
