*checks NYC weather* Oh boy…. winter is coming. I’m currently cuddled up in bed watching America’s Next Top Model and enjoying my last week of freedom. Next week, I get back to my reality and I’m excited to get into my normal routine. However, I am not ready for this winter weather that is headed my way. Sure, it got cold in North Carolina. But, I also hopped out of my car or the bus and ran for about 5 minutes until I was in a warm building. In NYC, you are pretty much always exposed to the elements for your commute. Also, if you ever want to leave your apartment to explore the city, you need the proper accessories in order to handle the chilling cold.
Today, we’re talking winter accessories. I love easy ways to make a stylish impression while also being able to keep warm. Luckily, I can also pop into some of my favorite coffee shops for a quick latte to warm up too.
1. World’s Warmest Parka
I have to say that I killed the outerwear game in 2018. One of the stars of my outerwear collection is my North Face parka. It keeps me incredibly warm and the fur lined hood is a fun touch. The cut and fit of this jacket are great because they give shape to your look even though it’s a large puffy down parka. This style comes in several different colors, but I opted for black so that it would go with everything and not show dirt as easily.
I’ve previously had a Columbia winter jacket that was great, but not as great of quality. And I swear everywhere you turn in the city, there is a Canada Goose jacket on someone. I also have heard a lot of great things about Patagonia coats. I recommend going for something that can handle snow and rain, keeps you incredibly warm, and can maintain a good shape for you.

2. The Biggest Wool Scarf
This Urban Outfitters scarf was a steallllllll. I couldn’t find the exact one that I got, but I’ve linked a few of my favorite styles. I prefer to spend a little bit more on my scarves to make sure that they are substantial and can actually keep my neck warm. My scarves paired with my extensive turtleneck collection keeps me so warm up at the face and neck which is critical for combatting the windy city streets of NYC.
I was a huge fan of infinity scarves in high school, but love a large blanket scarf for those incredibly cold days. To add a little bit of stylish flair, I’ll grab a scarf in a trendy pattern and neutral color palette.

3. Tech Gloves
Gloves are always the one thing that I forget to bring with me. It’s also probably the worst thing to forget when I’m continuously holding my phone to see where I need to turn next on Google Maps. My mom bought me these Old Navy tech-friendly gloves that are actually pretty effective. It’s super nice to be able to use my phone even with these gloves on. I always do want to invest in some nice leather gloves because they radiate chic opulence. That’s the exact energy that I want moving through 2019. I can already picture it now. Fabulous.

4. The Knitted Beanie
I’ll be the first person to tell you that I am not a hat person. I own maybe three hats: a cabby hat, this beanie, and a baseball cap that says “I lift a latte”… yeah. But, I am a huge fan of hats now that I live in a climate where the wind can actually be so aggressive that you’re scalp burns. Okay, it might not actually be that bad, but it also hasn’t gotten that cold yet. I love this knitted beanie from BooHoo because it was incredibly affordable, is cute and is super warm! I love the pouf detail on the top.
I’m also a huge fan of the cabby hat and I got mine from H&M because who knew they do sized hats. I got a size Large cabby hat and it fits my large circular head perfectly. I’d really love to get a tan version of the cabby hat because I think that would add an extra point of interest to pretty much any outfit.

5. OTK Sock Boots
I am a girl with large calves and thick thighs. Surprise! Finding over the knee boots that weren’t heeled was a struggle. But, I always pop into the Herald Square DSW to see what their new selection looks like. I came across these UNISA OTK boots and immediately fell in love. Should have bought them in both colors, to be honest! Over the knee boots are a good style staple when it’s cold out because you can pair them with jeans or leggings and maintain warmth all throughout your lower leg. I love pairing this with an oversized sweater and black leggings/jeans for an easy stylish look.
For when it’s snowing/hailing, I prefer a sturdier shoe with good traction. My Timberlands served me well during the first snow in November and hopefully, they will keep me warm if the snowflake on the forecast comes to fruition. Having warm shoes [preferably shearling lined] is always important and I also add in some J. Crew camp socks for extra padded warmth in my boots as well!

There you have it. These are my favorite accessories and some extra options that I’ve pulled from a range of stores and price points. I highly recommend investing a little more into your cold weather gear. It can be a brutal time outside if you aren’t properly dressed for the cold. I’d also like to point out that I prefer a neutral accessory, but if you love a pop of color these are the prime pieces to experiment with color and patterns and fun trends. Happy accessorizing! What’s your favorite place to shop for fun winter staples?
